Hotel Belalp

Situated at 2,137 meters above sea level, the Hotel Belalp not only offers an incomparable view of the Great Aletsch Glacier, the Rhone Valley and as far as the Matterhorn - it is also a place steeped in history in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch.

The hotel has been welcoming guests from all over the world for over 160 years - as a witness to the Belle Époque, as a place of power in the mountains and as a versatile destination for relaxing vacations, inspiring seminars or unforgettable celebrations.

Whether in summer or winter, with friends, family or as part of an event - the Hotel Belalp offers space for encounters: with 30 rooms, modern seminar rooms and lounges, a bright panoramic restaurant (120 seats) and a spacious sun terrace with 150 seats.

Tradition since 1856

Historical

The Hotel Belalp looks back on a long and eventful history. Since the 19th century, it has shaped the region above Naters and has not only accommodated numerous guests, but has also left its mark culturally and architecturally. The following text describes the most important milestones in the development of this traditional hotel - from its beginnings to its extensive renovation in 2019.

The ground-breaking ceremony for the imposing Belle Epoque building took place in 1856. The mountain hotel opened in 1858 and mainly welcomed guests from England - including the Irish alpinist and natural scientist John Tyndall (1820 to 1893). He spent 44 summers here. The Tyndall room is still preserved in its original state in his honor. The hotel was extended in 1870 and the number of guest beds was increased to 70 in 1885 with the construction of the Dépendance. The facilities even included a tennis court (!) and the hotel had its own stamps for the transportation of letters from its mainly international guests.

In 1993, the citizens of Naters saved the business on the Belalp from closure and renovated the building from the ground up in a style appropriate to the location. In the winter of 1999, the Dépendance suffered so badly from the masses of snow that it had to be demolished. In 2006, the nearby "Lingerie" (laundry) was integrated into the hotel operations as a charming vacation home. In 2011/12, the sun terrace was extended and a panorama restaurant was built to enhance the special location and optimize the existing offer in summer and winter. This allows for a variety of uses and showcases the unique Alpine panorama with large windows. The historic Belle Epoque-style restaurant was then renovated in 2015.

In spring 2019, the Hotel Belalp underwent an extensive total refurbishment and renovation of all guest rooms in the main building. During the renovation, care was taken to ensure that regional natural materials were used to retain the character of the hotel.

The most beautifully situated tennis court in the world

On August 23, 2012, the historic tennis court of the Hotel Belalp was awarded the title of "most beautifully situated tennis court in the world". It was the provisional conclusion of the "ambrüf" project by Franziska Schnell, a student on the Master's degree course in Art at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, in which a worldwide competition was launched to find the answer to this question.

She painstakingly uncovered the boundaries of the old tennis court so that a tennis match could be played in style at over 2100 meters above sea level when the certificate was presented.

Stamp with value

At that time, hotel postage stamps were used to collect the fee for transporting mail between the respective mountain hotel and the post office or vice versa. They were issued between 1864 and 1899.

At the 52nd International Rölli Auction in Lucerne in February 2012, some unusual hotel mail covers from Valais were also auctioned off. One particular highlight was a very rare "hotel letter" from the Hotel Belalp from 1884, which changed hands for 5800 francs. The minimum bid was 1500 francs. Sent to a Westminster address in London at the time, this rarity is now part of a philatelic collection from England.

Vacation chalet

Vacation chalet

Exclusivity included - Exclusive service was already a top priority 150 years ago, when the clothes of prominent hotel guests from all over the world were still washed by hand in the "Alte Lingeire". In the winter of 2006/07, the building - which has since been modernized by a private individual - was acquired by the local community and returned to the ownership of the Hotel Belalp.

Our lovingly renovated and furnished vacation chalet "Alte Lingerie" with its fantastic location on the Aletschbord can now be rented as a separate vacation chalet.

The vacation chalet with electric heating offers 2 bedrooms (double room and four-bed room) on 2 floors with continuous balcony with south view, shower / WC and a kitchen with open living room. The kitchen has all the necessary utensils such as fondue and raclette dishes as well as a Nespresso coffee machine, kettle etc., the living room has a TV and free wireless internet.

We are happy to offer you the entire hotel service such as room service, breakfast and dinner in the panorama room in the Hotel Belalp.

Minimum stay 3 nights. Costs per night from CHF 300.- incl. linen, electricity, final cleaning. For stays of 7 nights or more, we will be happy to make you a special offer during the summer months.

Hotel room & lounge

Hotel room & lounge

A little closer to heaven - at 2137 meters above sea level.
Here you sleep "like God" and find the perfect balance between relaxation, active recreation and enjoyable pause. Instead of classic wellness, genuine selfness awaits you - in the midst of an impressive mountain world.

The Hotel Belalp has 26 rooms with a total of up to 80 beds, divided into single rooms, double rooms and 3-bed and 4-bed rooms with shower/WC. Some rooms have a balcony with south-facing views. 2 double rooms are equipped with washbasin and shared shower/WC, one of which is the historic Tyndall room, which is also available to our guests.

Either way, you could be like Winston Churchill, who wrote the following in a letter after a stay in the Aletsch region. "I: have now waited a week to be able to describe to you as accurately as possible the impression this place makes on me. It is magnificent. I sleep like a log and feel healthier than ever."

Furthermore, the "Alte Gaststube" was extensively renovated in 2015 and now shines again with the old charm of the Belle Epoque. The parlor as well as the lounge with TV and games corners are freely available to all guests. Whether with a good glass of wine and a magazine or for a game of cards with the whole family.
